The Possum Town Quilters held their first meeting on February 24, from 11
a.m. until 1 p.m. at Hancock Fabrics on highway 45 in Columbus, MS. The
meeting began with about 14 present and soon grew to 22 in attendance on
the main floor of the store. Sharon Hedrick welcomed everyone and assured
them that all levels of interest and experience were welcome. There was a discussion on what everyone would like to achieve with the guild, short and long term. A lot of good ideas were brought up and some very handy hints were passed on, including the use of Orvus Paste to wash all your quilting fabric and quilts. Diane Lochala has offered to create and maintain a web site for the Possum Town Quilters. It was suggested that we look into what is required for the Possum Town Quilters to become a certified quilting guild. Sharon Hedrick is going to contact Mary Nell from MQA and find out how to go about making this group a proper guild and report back at the next meeting. The possibility of meeting in several smaller groups and more often was bought up and everyone agreed that would be a good thing to do, but still have regular monthly meetings. Also, the option of meeting in different locations for different projects was mentioned, since Hancock’s doesn’t have the room for the whole group to do a major sewing day. There were several suggestions made for different locations. The meeting ended with all present introducing themselves and stating their goals for the group and their personal growth in the pursuit of quilting. |

Block Of The Month

Judy Stokes demonstrated a pieced pinwheel block called Can’t Stop Spinnin’ with a challenge to all interested. They are to come to the next meeting with up to six of the pinwheel blocks made to enter into a lottery type drawing. The blocks must have the colors of yellow for the center pinwheel and black for the outer corners, which will make up another pinwheel. For each block that is entered, the name of the person who made it will be entered into the drawing, up to six blocks per person. A name or names will be drawn to win the blocks. Several people could go home with enough blocks to make a nice quilt, depending on how many blocks are entered. This is going to be a monthly occurrence and it was stressed that once you win a group of blocks your name will not be included in future drawings, but you still have to participate by making blocks, until everyone has blocks for a quilt. This will be used as a chance to learn different techniques starting off simply and advancing to more complicated blocks.
